Well - "short" - sort of. 3 weeks aboard our LeBoat cruiser for the 17th trip(out of 23 years). My darling wife and I (just the 2 of us) have cruised nearly every canal in France, Holland, Belgium and England - and the Venice trip was one of the most memorable. As listed below, the surprises that awaited us along the Venice route were amazing. Second only to the food. We each gained a couple of inches around the middle - so be as careful with the eating as much as the maneuvering of the boat along the spacious lagoon and nearby rivers.
Started in Casale, cruised down to Burano, where we spent 3 nights. Beautiful little island with much to see and buy (lace). Then into the Venice area for 4 nights. Anyone who's been to venice knows how beautiful and fun that is - concerts, wandering, pizza everywhere, back streets with little shops. The South to the AMAZING fishing village of Chioggia. Expected to stay overnight - stayed 3 nights. One of the big surprises. Bicycled all over, wonderful village just 3 hours motorng South of Venice. Then a long day to Padua - two nights there, back to Venice for another feast, Burano for another night, then up to Treviso before returning to Casale. Only problem we had - was the drought - for the rivers were low, and we had to moor up 5 miles East of Padua and 10 miles South of Treviso, but the bus rides are frequent and fun.
Although it was a new boat, it was not really fit for purpose in the choppy waters of Venice lagoon. The drawers all slid open (no locks) and 3 glasses were broken on the 2nd day. Also not mosquito proof! Severe lack of moorings around the area.
See previous comments re fitness of boat and lack of mooring.
Everything was as promised; check-in was a little confused with only one agent at the desk. Maps provided need updates to indicate marinas with more detailed information; information was of a very general nature.
The staff at the base were very helpful as were the booking team.
The holiday was a wonderful experience and the location added an extra dimension, even for those used to boating holidays at home. It was a costly experience though, and we felt that the add-on charges were a totally unnecessary and greedy insult - seat cushions for example, should be included and BBQs a free option. The expense of shopping and bikes are naturally to be expected.
