Reviews for the The Sancerre Short Break
Booking experience was very good and the agent very helpful. Sadly it all started to fall apart a week or so before the trip when the inclement weather hit France. The email communication was misleading one saying we needed to change cruise start base the other saying it was going to be the same, then the boat we'd booked 12 months in advance for a special international family holiday was no longer available. Despite obvious and long term damage to the canal we were advised to go to Chatillon Sur Loire where we sat for two and a half days before the obvious was confirmed and sailing from that base cancelled. We were transported to our planned end base and were able to enjoy several days on the canal albeit without the air conditioning we had specifically wanted on the boat. Getting refunds for services not provided eg one way trip has been slow. Compensation for the disruption is poor.Despite all of the above when we were on the canal we had great fun; the staff at the base stations at least tried to be helpful and other boats with returning guests said this was not reflective of their previous Le boat holidays. The scenery was lovely; the lock keepers excellent and there were great places to moor and visit so I would recommend it as a holiday option. What could have been done better was the response to the canal damage. We met a canal inspector early on the Sunday who informed us that the canal would not be open for a week at least so obviously this information was available before we joined the base station. As we had an early check-in booked & arrived before 11.00am, there would have been plenty of time to have us transferred to Decize on the Saturday and for us to start our cruise on the Saturday evening.
Very pretty place with historic places to visit. Excellent restaurants and great scenery.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week despite not getting the one-way cruise we had booked. Briare was a beautiful town, great walks with lots to see. Lovely local market and good restaurants. Spectacular M.Eifel aquaduct over the Loire - not to be missed.
Very pretty canal with lovely stopping points along the way. We went in Sept so very quiet and peaceful. No problem stopping or finding places to eat and shop. Montargis was our turning point where we had the only wet day/night. We played a lot of petanque along the way and we took a couple of bikes that gave a different perspective as well as some exercise.
We spent a week cruising on the canal from Chatillon sur Loire in July 2013. Sancerre was beautiful and the canal south of there much prettier than the part near Chatillon. Don't miss the entrance to Briare which you can do on a day trip north of Chatillon. We did this on our way back.
