More about Burgundy

1216310501 Fontenoy1Quaint medieval towns and villages dot the countryside and provide glimpses into a rural and unchanged way of life, largely unspoilt by tourism and certainly unhurried by 21st century standards. Criss-crossed with a network of tranquil waterways, a cruise through this picturesque region also takes you through the wealthiest and perhaps most gastronomic region of France – a haven for all who appreciate relaxed living, fi ne wines and excellent cuisine.

Our four strategically positioned bases on the principal waterways of the region each provide perfect starting points for a cruising holiday in Burgundy.

Set against the backdrop of the blue-tinged Vosges mountains, Fontenoy-le-Château is a typical medieval Comtois market town on the banks of the Canal de Vosges. Its relaxed charm makes this a delightful place to visit at the start or end of your holiday.

Further downstream on the banks of the River Saône, our base at Gray was once a thriving port for the wine, wheat and iron trades and evidence of the rich cultural and trading heritage is plain to see in the surrounding towns, villages and countryside.

From our base at St Jean de Losne – the capital of Burgundy’s waterways – the Canal de Bourgogne winds its way through verdant countryside to Dijon, the capital of the region and famed for its palatial buildings, opulent facades and rich heritage. Heading east you can cruise on the Canal du Rhône au Rhin as far as the towns of Dole and Besançon, towns steeped in history and heritage and well worth visiting.

A variety of picturesque cruising options is possible from our base at Branges; follow the pretty River Seille through meadowlands and fields to the splendid market town of Louhans or head south on the majestic River Saône towards Mâcon, famous for its rich red wines. Or, choose to cruise along the Canal du Centre past the neatly planted premier cru vineyards of Burgundy’s legendary Côte de Beaune wine region.
