More About The Thames

ThamesChoose from two starting points on the Thames - Benson, near Oxford or Chertsey, near Windsor. Cruising in either direction, you'll visit some of England's oldest and prettiest towns in the heart of England - Marlow, Cookham, Pangbourne, Reading, Henley-upon-Thames, Windsor and Kingston-upon-Thames all have rich histories and make perfect day-trips for shopping, sightseeing or stocking up on provisions. Art galleries, museums and theatres are all within easy reach of the water, and family fun can be had at nearby Legoland, Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures. Beale Park wildlife park and gardens makes for a great day out with easy mooring alongside too.

Whichever direction you choose, cruising on the Thames is relaxed and easy. Friendly lock-keepers ensure your safe onward journey past the magnificent homes of the rich and famous and world-famous English landmarks - Cliveden House, Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace to name but a few. Stop for refreshment at centuries-old pubs right by the water's edge or enjoy afternoon strolls hunting for antiques, shopping in markets and walks in England's beautiful countryside.

At the ancient town of Windsor you'll discover more than 1000 years of history at the Royal Palace of Windsor Castle, the largest occupied castle in the world and present-day home of the Queen of England. Its turreted skyline makes an impressive sight and the surrounding parks are perfect for cycling, walking, horse-riding and picnics.

"Wonderful cruising all the way! We wished we could have stayed longer!"

Cruise upstream as far as one of England's most prestigious cities, Oxford, the 'city of dreaming spires' and home to scholars for more than 800 years. Visit the magnificent honey-coloured stone buildings of Oxford University, browse the Victorian shopping arcades and while away an afternoon punting on the river or dining at a riverside restaurant - life doesn't get much more English than this.

Head downstream to Kingston-upon-Thames for up-market shopping, restaurants and theatres, as well as fast access to London and the sights of the Capital. Further on have fun in the mazes of Hampton Court Palace, favoured home of King Henry VIII, where you can step back in time visiting the vast Tudor kitchens, state rooms and immaculate gardens.
