Cruising in either direction from our base at Benson, you’ll visit some of England’s oldest and prettiest towns in the heart of England – Marlow, Cookham, Pangbourne and Reading all have rich histories and make perfect day-trips for shopping or stocking up on provisions. Nature reserves, museums, theatres and the Legoland amusement park are all within easy reach of the water too. En route, catch glimpses of magnificent homes of the rich and famous – their velvet-green lawns sweep down to the water’s edge and stop for refreshment at centuries-old pubs right by the water’s edge.
Cruising east you’ll reach the ancient town of Windsor and discover more than 1000 years of history at the Royal Palace of Windsor Castle, the largest occupied castle in the world and present-day home of the Queen of England. Its turreted skyline makes an impressive sight and the surrounding parks are perfect for cycling, walking, horse-riding and picnics.
Cruise west through open meadows and green pastures to one of England’s most prestigious cities, Oxford, the ‘city of dreaming spires’ and home to scholars for more than 800 years. Visit the magnificent honey-coloured stone buildings of Oxford University, browse the Victorian shopping arcades and while away an afternoon punting on the river or dining at a riverside restaurant – life doesn’t get much more English than this.
