In this village was born the first female Baccalaureate of France, Julie Victoire Daubier. Her effigy adorns the village sqaure. Fontenoy is also renowned as a writers' village, homeland of the poets Gilbert and Francois Mattenet. This intellectual heritage is an inspiration today, and during your excursions around the town you will see quotations from these celebrated authors , posted on buildings and lamp-posts.

The most popular rendez-vous is the bar "L'Arlequin", in the village centre, five minutes' walk from the base. Here you can enjoy a game of billiards and, perhaps, meet some of the "old sages" of the village who frequent the place.

"La Scie Goguette" is worth a visit, at 3 kms from the port. You would be wise to telephone in advance, on: 03 29 36 20 99. If you would like transport, the proprietor will collect you ( and bring you back) free of charge! The proprieter has also told us that she can deliver meals on request to clients moored at locks 36, 37, 38, 39 and 40 when cruising towards Gray and Saint-Jean de Losne or back.
Atmosphere: This is a farm-house restaurant , or Auberge, where the children can play outside. You will enjoy the relaxed, cheerful atmosphere.
Cuisine: The cuisine is typically rural French, using local produce.
