Why do we recommend stopping here?

Sometimes referred to as " the jewel of the Saone valley", and " the second capital of Haute-Saône", Auxonne was a strategically important fortified town in the middle ages. It is nowadays a market town, but still houses the barracks of the 512th. Regt. du Train.

What is there to see?

The ancient arsenal of artillery, the Eglise de Notre Dame( c.XIV & XVI) , the Château d'Auxonne, including the Museum Napoleon Bonaparte.

What can I visit?

All the above, plus a watersports centre.

Is this place famous for anything?

A certain young lieutenant Napoleon Bonaparte spent some of his formative years in the (then) military school, before aspiring to greater heights…………..

The 1st. Of May: Concours of running & cycling. The 13th. Of July: picnic & entertainment in the Town Hall gardens. The 14th of July, Bastille Day: Dancing,Son & lumiére, fireworks, at the port and the open-air centre. 2nd. Week in September: triathlon & fair.
