Why do we recommend stopping here?

The picturesque Broadland village of South Walsham, with its thatched cottages and a village green is about a mile from the Broad and makes a pleasant stoll. The churches of St Mary and St Lawrence share a churchyard, and there are some attractive stained glass panels in St Marys Church to see. There are some very pleasant walks and an abundance of wildlife to be seen.

What can I visit?

Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden at School Road, South Walsham is a pretty, natural woodland and water garden. Featuring a sensory garden, it also boasts an oak tree which is 950 years old and is frequented by over 90 species of birds throughout the seasons. On Sunday afternoons you can listen to music in the Glade. Open daily from 10 - 17.00 with some extended opening hours from May to August. Admission costs £4.75 for adults, £2.25 for children - unders 5's go free.

Insider Information

In 1827, the church of St Lawrence was gutted by fire. The people seem to have made the chancel safe, and the rest was left to crumble. In the spring of 1971 the tower was struck by lightning; shortly afterwards the sonic boom of a low-flying plane caused it to collapse! Today, the ruins have been completely restored as a parish hall.
