Pangbourne Meadows, owned by National Trust, offers lots of space to relax, for children to run around and for walks in the beautiful countryside here. The railway station, at Shooters Hill, offers the opportunity for sightseeing further afield. In June, Pangbourne Fete is well worth a visit.
Pangbourne is rich with literary associations, you can moor outside the Swan Inn where Jerome K Jerome's Three Men in a Boat stopped here, John Galsworthy used Pangbourne as a setting in The Forsyte Saga, as did Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for a Sherlock Holmes story.
Kenneth Grahame, who wrote The Wind in the Willows, lived at Church Cottage, Pangbourne.
During World Wars 1 & 2 the river at Pangbourne was used to train allied forces to build bailey and pontoon bridges. Before the D Day landings many bridges were built across the Thames and then dismantled.

Pangbourne Meadows is a lovely place to moor but you need to be aware that space is limited and to get a mooring you shouldn't leave it too late in the day. There are no facilities here but a walk across the meadows into Pangbourne will provide you with most things you need. Directly across the river lies the smaller Oxfordshire village of Whitchurch-on-Thames. Free moorings are available at the Swan pub for customers using the pub.
