Alternative Location:
A pretty village, just north of Streatley and south of Wallingford, famous for the Beetle and Wedge Hotel, which marks the site of the old ferry which once linked Moulsford and South Stoke, which face each other across the river. South Stoke has a pretty church and a 17th century village pub. Neither village has any shops.
Just north of Moulsford is Moulsford Railway Bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built in 1838-1839. The brick torsional curves of the Moulsford railway bridge are one of the man-made marvels of the Thames.
The Beetle & Wedge Hotel is where HG Wells stayed while he was writing 'The History of Mr Polly' and in the book, the hotel is called the Potwell Inn. Like many other villages in Oxfordshire, it has also been used for the filming of the popular television series, Midsomer Murders.
One of Moulsford’s claim to fame is a gold 'torc', a heavy necklace, that was found in one of the farm fields in April 1960 and dating from the Middle Bronze Age. Another is to do with the railway. Queen Adelaide, widow of William IV joined a train going to Slough at Moulsford, so becoming the first member of the royal family to travel by train!
