Carcassonne is a world renowned UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of France's top tourist attractions. It has easy access from the airport and railway station and is an unmissable stop if you are cruising this part of the canal.
The Medieval City, the castle and ramparts, the Basilica St Nazaire, where mass is still celebrated every Sunday at 11am. For something different, visit The Raymond Chésa Leisure Park , close to the imposing walls of the Cité Médiévale, and extending over 40 hectares - with picnic areas, pedalos, a mini golf course, several beach volleyball courts and a forest adventure park. The Number 7 bus gets you there very easily.
Joë Bousquet, a French poet who was born at Narbonne, lived at Carcassone until his death. You can visit the Memorial House where he lived.
Rene Nelli (1906 - 1982), writer, historian. Befriended Joe Bousquet and members of the Surrealist movement, more specifically Paul Eluard. As a historian he instigated a new interest in the art of the Troubadours and Catharism, which led to the renaissance of a modern occitan culture.
It is quieter during the night to moor on the far side of the marina from the town.
The municipal pool at Carcassonne is too far from the canal. There is however an open air pool called Piscine Paicherou open normally between mid June and the end of August and is about 15 minutes walk through the main shopping street.
