The town, a typical rural Irish market town, attracts thousands of visitors each year for some great fishing. The recently built marina offers superb facilities for all who stay here and has a wonderful array of both restaurants and pubs and lively music sessions which can last into the small hours especially during the long summer evenings.
The bridge itself is a famous attraction with its Napoleonic fort built in the 1800's to protect the town against a French invasion from the West of Ireland. The other ancient defences that can be viewed include the only inland Martello Tower in Ireland, Fort Falkland and Fort Eliza.
Take a taxi to Lusmagh Pet Farm - this ever popular farm boasts a large variety of farm animals as well as a nature trail, farm machinery, breeding ostriches and a coffee shop.
Birr Castle Demesne (8 miles from Banagher): Ireland’s largest award-wining gardens and Historic Science Centre revealing the lives and scientific achievements of the Earls of Rosse, The Third Earl’s World Famous Great Telescope
The town is the home of the Banagher Concrete Group, the company who made the blocks and internal rings for the Channel Tunnel.
Famous residents have included Anthony Trollope, the Brontë sisters and singer/artist Johnny McEvoy.
The Banagher Coarse Angling Festival and the Portumna Classic match competitions are held every year at a number of venues in the area, usually in April/May and again in September/October.
